The Owl & Otter – logo and brand identity
Client: The Owl & Otter
Having worked with the sisters behind Sorella Sorella for a number of years, we were thrilled when they approached us to help with the design of their latest culinary venture – the refurbishment and launch of a new gastropub in Dipton, County Durham.
The family-run team were very keen to have an Owl as part of their pub name, so we created a list of potential titles inspired by wildlife, local landmarks, and the rich mining heritage of the area.
The Owl & Otter was chosen by the pub team for its alliterative qualities and links to local wildlife.
The team’s mission is to create a pub which offers top-quality food, drinks, and service in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere – a dining experience which they believe customers will make an effort to travel for.
A rewarding destination worthy of effort is the concept behind our logo design; as Otter leaves his watery home and takes to the skies.
This design concept also solved the problem of how to visually bring together two creatures from different habitats.
Humour is used to create a friendly and engaging identity for the pub.
The ampersand – which serves as a perch for Owl – is used in print materials throughout the pub interior as a titling device for menus and signage; when the full logo is not required for brand recognition.
We also designed a minimalist variation of the logo for use at small sizes (such as online) where the detail-heavy engraving style of illustration for Owl and Otter would deteriorate.
Along with the logo and brand identity, we also designed the menus, exterior signage and website for The Owl & Otter.
