Tyne View: A Walk Around The Port Of Tyne
Clients: New Writing North on behalf of Port of Tyne
Velcrobelly designed and typeset Tyne View; this beautiful 368-page book by Port of Tyne writer in residence Michael Chaplin.
Michael and his three companions – artist Birtley Aris, poet Christy Ducker and photographer Charles Bell – set off to walk the tidal length of the River Tyne from South Shields to Tynemouth via Wylam. Together they captured the heart and soul of Tyneside’s big river.
Tyne View was printed by Martins the Printers; who produced a limited edition of 100 case bound books, with uncoated endpapers and ribbon marker, for Port of Tyne to distribute as gifts; alongside 1,000 softback copies for retail.
The book is available to purchase from New Writing North, Amazon and all good book shops in the north east of England.

A lovely book. The book that the River Tyne deserves.

A wonderful journey full of surprising stories, illuminating information, stunning photos and gorgeous drawings about the most important but neglected part of our landscape. Every Tynesider should have a copy.

This is a beautifully produced book which reflects life in the towns and villages around the lower part of the Tyne as it exists today. It uses poetry, drawings, stunning photographs and superb writing to explore the connection between the people of Tyneside and the river. It’s a wonderful meander which takes you off on some lovely detours through history, industry, music and literature, but which never strays too far from the sight and sound of the river or its people.
I’ve read a lot of books about the region over the years and this deserves a place amongst the best. It is one to keep on the shelf and dip into whenever you need a bit of nourishment or to remind yourself why people matter more than profit. I loved it and I hope it stays in print for many, many years to come.
