Alston Explorer
Client: Flo-culture
A collaborative project led by Flo-culture on behalf of North Pennines Area of Natural Beauty.
Flo-culture commissioned Velcrobelly to work as part of their creative team on Alston Explorer – a mobile app which supports growth of the tourism economy in the Alston area of North Pennines Area of Natural Beauty.
Alston Explorer is an app designed for active families; encouraging participants to stay longer, explore further and discover more about Alston during their visit.
In collaboration with staff and pupils from an Alston Moor Federation School; Flo-culture and Velcrobelly engaged with a Year 6 class to research user interaction and gamification; while also providing additional design education for their curriculum.
Research data from the pupils – a key demographic of our app’s target audience – provided an insightful starting point for designing interactive features, user interface and visual narrative.
As part of the creative team, Velcrobelly was responsible for Alston Explorer’s art direction.
Design deliverables included:
- App icon
- Title screen and logo
- UI elements and style guidance for the UI team
- Screen layout templates
- Character design and illustration
- Trophy and reward icons
- Content, narrative and editorial
